Online Campaign To Promote Organ Donation

An online campaign prompting people to sign up for organ donation when they register to vote or book a driving test has been launched.

Conservative MP Grant Shapps says the idea is to use more Government websites to guide users to the Organ Donor Register webpage.

"People will now be able to sign up when they apply online for a passport, register to vote, renew their driving licence, or renew their Oyster card," he said.

"This is in addition to people who already see a prompt when renewing their driving licence or tax disc online."

Some 830,000 people have followed the online prompt to the donor registration page when renewing their car tax online.

The idea is to increase the number of registered donors after figures showed nearly 7,000 people in the UK are waiting for a transplant, and three die every day before they can receive one.

However, the Liberal Democrats say the law should be changed and instead follow the Welsh system.

In December 2015, Wales will adopt the "opt out" system of automatic organ donor registration.

Norman Lamb MP says it would make a huge difference in England.

"I'm someone who absolutely would be happy to give my organs to save somebody else's life but I haven't actually got round to signing up myself," he said.

"I suspect, across the country, you'd find many in the same situation... If they were assumed to have signed up, with the right to opt out, we know we will save lives."

The Government campaign also highlights the importance of "starting a conversation" within families so people know their relatives' stance on donation.

The mother of six-year-old Albert Tansey, who had a heart transplant five months ago, says that is the most important part of the campaign.

"It's something that none of us want to talk about. We don't want to talk about cancer, we don't want to talk about heart attacks, but it's real and it happens," she said.

"It's life changing, hugely, for everyone who's affected."

Sally Johnson, director of organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, agrees.

"I think people don't often realise that whatever the legislation is you still have to involve the family in the process so discussion with the family is key," she said.
