Stand Up: Party Leader's Plea To Young People

Sky News' Stand Up Be Counted: How It Works

Updated: 8:50am UK, Monday 01 September 2014

By Afua Hirsch, Social Affairs and Education Editor

There is a group of people in this country who are invisible. They have little ability to influence politics, their voices are rarely heard in the news, and their opinions are largely ignored.

:: Click here to visit the Stand Up Be Counted site

This may sound like the predicament of a small and hard to reach minority, but it has been the reality for more than half of young people in the UK.

Many 18 to 24 year olds don't vote. At the last election, only 44% of that age group voted. That means more than half not influencing who gets into power.

It means politicians can comfortably ignore a whole demographic, confident in the knowledge that they have no influence at the ballot box.

It means disengaging from the process which governs everyone's lives.

From today, Sky News is doing something different, to create a change. We are launching Stand Up Be Counted - to help give young people a voice.

Our new site will let people in this age group upload a short clip of them talking on camera about something they are passionate about.

This could range from prejudice in the criminal justice system, to the effect of the rise in tuition fees, and calls for cycling helmets to be made mandatory.

The Stand Up site is already a showcase for creative, absorbing and sometimes entertaining debate from 16-25 year olds in their bedroom, back garden or high street, talking about the things that matter to them.

You can share it too, on mobile devices on WhatsApp and Kik, and on all devices on Twitter, Facebook and email.

The process is simple. You can register via the upload button at the top of your screen. You'll need a profile picture and a short biography up to 50 words.

After that, you're a few clicks away from being able to upload your video or content. Short videos - ideally around 60 seconds - blogs and photos are all welcome on one condition - they have to come from the heart.

And it's safe to speak openly, and powerfully.

This is a place for robust debate, with zero tolerance for abuse, so that you can make your point freely, knowing that as well as starting conversations with your peers, you also have access to Sky News' audience, and crucially, those in power who have found it all too easy to ignore the views of young people.

One click on the site takes you straight to the page where you can register to vote - an act that, were every young person to do it - would drastically transform the political and decision-making landscape in this country.

This is changing Sky News, too. The voices we are hearing are informing our coverage and changing our perspective.

It's easy to think that because they don't vote, young people are disinterested.

Venting frustration on Facebook at "corruption" (one of the words young people we asked most associate with politics) is not enough.

Now is the time to speak. And, crucially, speak where the nation is listening.

Three Arrested Over New Forest Mum Murder

Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a mother-of-five in the New Forest.

She suffered multiple stab wounds. Her husband Pete found her body on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have arrested one person on suspicion of murder, one for perverting the course of justice and another for assisting an offender.

All remain in custody, and Mrs Davis' family has been informed.

Police have continued to increase patrols in the area to reassure residents.

Officers hunting her killer believe the murder weapon was a bladed item, possibly a knife, and was probably discarded close to the scene.

They are conducting fingertip searches of the paddock and are dredging the adjacent river.

Mrs Davis, from Blackfield, worked in a supermarket and married just four months ago.

Her husband, children and parents visited the paddock on Friday morning and left flowers with messages from each member of the family.

Mr Davis' message said: "Angel, all my love, always and forever Pete."

One of her daughters left a note saying: "Dearest mum, you were a goddess. I swear I'll make you proud.

"I like to think you're sitting there, watching on a cloud. You had so much more to give. You had so much more to do. But now I'll be your legacy. I'll do it all for you."

Ashya Set For Specialist Treatment In Prague

Brain tumour patient Ashya King is ready to travel from Spain to the Czech Republic for specialist cancer treatment, according to his parents' lawyer.

Juan Isidro Fernandez Diaz said the five-year-old child could fly to Prague by Monday at the latest to have proton beam radiotherapy - a technique not available to him on the NHS.

The Proton Therapy Centre (PTC) told Sky News that hospital doctors in the Czech capital would make a final decision about his treatment after a meeting on Monday morning.

The boy is currently at a medical centre in Malaga after parents Brett and Naghmeh King removed him from a Southampton hospital over a week ago without doctors' consent.

Iva Tatounova Proton Therapy Centre (PTC) spokeswoman Iva Tatounova

PTC spokeswoman Iva Tatounova said: "Czech doctors will review documents from Malaga about the current status of the boy and will be able to say 'Yes he is capable of travelling to Prague'."

It comes after a British judge ruled the youngster could be transported from Spain for the treatment.

Mr Diaz said Ashya was in "perfect condition to travel", adding that the boy was playing with his family and his toys.

He said the parents were "really happy" with the judge's decision and the British court had been "really nice with us".

The boy will stay at a children's hospital near the PTC which carries out the treatment, he added.

The couple had been detained in Spain under a European arrest warrant issued by UK authorities before it was withdrawn following a public outcry and the pair were released.

The judge Mr Justice Baker approved the Kings' request on Friday to have Ashya moved to Prague.

A lawyer representing bosses at Southampton General Hospital told the judge that doctors aimed to provide chemotherapy but not proton beam.

Vikram Sachdeva said such treatment could not be provided in Britain.

The judge said he had been told specialists at the PTC had considered a treatment plan.

And he said he had seen evidence of the treatment planned, evidence of plans to fly Ashya to Prague and evidence that Mr and Mrs King could afford the cost of treatment and transport.

The judge said he would cease to have responsibility for Ashya once the youngster arrived at the Czech hospital.

Phone Snatchers' Favourite Handsets Revealed

Apple's latest iPhones have topped the list of handsets most likely to be targeted by thieves.

The iPhone 5 was named the phone most likely to be stolen in a new Government consumer study.

In fact, Apple products filled the top four places of the Home Office's Mobile Phone Theft Ratio.

The Blackberry 9790 sneaked in at number five.

Samsung and HTC phones also won a spot in the Top 10.

The list, published by Home Secretary Theresa May, analysed theft data from August 2012 to January 2014.

According to a crime survey for England and Wales, some 742,000 phones were stolen in the 2012/2013 period.

The Metropolitan Police reported almost 100,000 mobile phone thefts in London alone during 2013.

Apple's New iPhone 4s Goes on Sale The paper found that 14 to 24-year-olds are most at risk of phone theft

Ms May said: "Crime has fallen by more than 10% under this government.

"However, the level of mobile phone theft remains a concern and people are increasingly carrying their lives in their pockets, with bank details, emails and other sensitive personal information easily accessible through mobile phones.

"This is why it is vital that government, police and industry work together to tackle this crime."

Mrs May said the Government was working closely with industry leaders to find a way to prevent mobile phones being reactivated overseas.

That, in turn, could cut demand for stolen products.

She said "vital action" was also being taken to introduce near features to allow phones to be tracked and wiped when they are reported missing.

The paper found that 14 to 24-year-olds are most at risk of theft, with women being particularly vulnerable.

It includes a list of steps people can take to protect themselves from theft, warning that people are most likely to have phones taken directly from their person.

It also urges people not to leave their phones unattended, for example at a table in a bar.

Girl, 11, 'Sexually Assaulted' At Picnic Site

Police have increased patrols near Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight after an 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted during a family visit to a picnic site.

The girl was at Fort Victoria on Saturday morning when she was approached by a man who assaulted her before walking away, Hampshire Police said.

Detective Sergeant John Stirling said: "This was a rare but very serious incident against a child, during the day in a busy picnic site.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area or who recognises the man from the description."

The man was said to be white with pale skin, aged in his 50s, with grey hair and was clean shaven. He was around six feet tall, of average build and with a deep voice.

He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt with dark blue and light blue stripes and blue jeans.

The force said a man arrested on Saturday was released and no further action is to be taken against him.

It said patrols had been stepped up in the area over the weekend to reassure the local community.

UK Offers To Send 'Ring Of Steel' To Calais

By Joe Tidy, Sky News Reporter

The Home Office is offering to give French border officials the fence that was used to protect world leaders at the Nato summit in an attempt to deal with the immigrant crisis in Calais.

Known as the "ring of steel", the 11ft tall, 11-mile-long fence was erected around Celtic Manor and other Nato venues in South Wales.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, immigration minister James Brokenshire acknowledges the growing issue of security in the port of Calais where migrants are attempting to gain access to Britain in vast numbers.

Nato fence to be given to France The 'ring of steel' is being offered to the French

The minister writes: "Obviously it's up to the French to maintain security and order on their own soil, but we want to do what we can to help. We offered the port of Calais £3m three months ago to help improve security … we now offer our French partners the fences that were used this week to keep the Nato summit safe in Newport.

"These could replace and enlarge the inadequate fencing in Calais which is too easy for illegal immigrants to scale."

It is estimated that 1,500 migrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea and Ethiopia are living in makeshift camps near the port and regularly climbing over fences in order to get to lorries and ferries.

On Wednesday, dozens of men stunned French officials by storming directly into the port in broad daylight.

Most of the young men claim to be seeking asylum in the UK and risk their lives to get onto ships bound for Dover.

Sudanese migrant Ibrahim Abubakar said: "I have no home, I have no job, I have no place to sleep. This is my problem here. I want to stay here, but they give me a long time, I wait four months here. After that, maybe I find a home, I find a job. It's very difficult here. But I think after I go to England maybe I find job, I find a home, I find something to eat."

Some warn that the situation is near breaking point with local anger growing at the influx of migrants.

A protest is planned later today with hundreds of local people expected to demonstrate.

The mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart has threatened to close the port if nothing is done by British authorities to help French officials address the situation.

Mr Brokenshire hopes the French will take him up on the offer of boosted fencing and also writes that he wants to establish "secure parking areas where hauliers and travellers can wait without being hassled by illegal immigrants".

Meanwhile, the Home Office is preparing to send a high-level delegation to Paris for emergency talks next week.

Scotland: Every Vote Counts In Referendum Race

Better Together leader Alistair Darling has told Sky News that "every voter... can tip the balance" when Scotland votes on independence later this month.

His comments come after a YouGov poll commissioned by The Sunday Times suggested the Yes camp now leads the race by 51% to 49%.

But Mr Darling said Scotland will benefit from staying in the United Kingdom, adding there would be "no going back" if the Yes vote is victorious on September 18.

"What's clear now... is that every voter in Scotland can tip the balance in this referendum," Mr Darling said.

Scottish Referendum YouGov poll The results are evidence of a dramatic surge for the Yes campaign

"Remember this isn't a protest vote. If we decide to leave, there's no going back. This is forever.

"I believe passionately that we can build a much better future for Scotland by remaining in the United Kingdom.

"The risks of independence for families, for our country, are real and I would rather build a better future for Scotland by staying in the UK."

The poll means the Yes campaign has overturned a 22-point lead for the Better Together campaign within the past month.

Opposing supporters wait for the leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, Ed Miliband, during a campaign visit, ahead of the forthcoming Scottish vote for independence from the United Kingdom, in East Kilbride Opposing supporters carry banners in East Kilbride

Scotland's Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the poll results are encouraging, but insisted there was "not a hint of complacency" in the Yes camp.

"It's a very encouraging poll and it reflects what we are finding on the ground in the campaign across the country."

"We have got a lot of work still to do. There's not a hint of complacency in the Yes campaign."

She said the offer of more powers for Holyrood in the event of a No vote was a "panic move" by those against independence.

Times. The YouGov poll was commissioned by the Sunday Times

Chancellor George Osborne has said an action plan will be unveiled in the next few days to give more powers to Scotland if it remained part of the UK.

The Chancellor said it was "clear" Scotland wanted more autonomy and the Tories, Labour and the Liberal Democrats had agreed to "deliver" on that.

"You will see in the next few days a plan of action to give more powers to Scotland. More tax powers, more spending powers, more plans for powers over the welfare state," he said.

And Mr Osborne repeated the warning that an independent Scotland would not be able to share the pound.

Scottish referendum decision time graphic

"No ifs, no buts. We will not share the pound if Scotland separates from the rest of the UK," he said.

In an interview for Sky's Murnaghan programme, former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown made another appeal for a successful No vote.

"I think it's about two visions of Scotland's future, different from the future that might have been predicted a few years ago," Mr Brown said.

"The first is obviously the nationalists, who want to break entirely with the United Kingdom and break all connections.

"The second is what I would call the patriotic vision of Scotland's future, my vision.

"I want a Scottish Parliament, I want stronger powers, and therefore I want change to make it stronger, but I also want to share our resources with the rest of the United Kingdom."
