Climber Dies In Avalanche In Highlands

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 01 Februari 2015 | 23.39

A man who was reported missing in the Scottish Highlands has been killed in an avalanche.

He and a friend failed to return from a climb on Coireag Dubh Mor in the Torridon area on Friday.

Rescue teams found the second man walking out from the area to get help for the other on Saturday.

When they reached the trapped climber he was dead.

Both men - from Suffolk - were experienced climbers with the proper equipment, police said.

There has been persistent heavy snow and strong winds across the Highlands in recent weeks.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "On the Friday night police were alerted to two overdue climbers who had undertaken climbs on Coireag Dubh Mor in the Torridon area of the western Highlands.

"Torridon Mountain Rescue Team were alerted and air assistance was provided by Stornoway coastguard helicopter.

"Poor weather conditions made for difficult search conditions.

"The search continued during Saturday. One of the climbers was traced in the early afternoon, walking out to summon assistance for his companion. Both had been avalanched.

"His companion was subsequently traced, but did not survive."

Mosques Offer Tea And Cake To Ease Tensions

Mosques across Britain have opened their doors to the public, in a bid to bring communities together and alleviate tensions about terrorism in the wake of the Paris attacks.

More than 20 venues are serving tea and cakes to visitors who want to understand more about Islam.

Sunday's Visit My Mosque event was organised by the Muslim Council of Britain "to demonstrate unity and solidarity during what has been a tense time for faith communities".

The Finsbury Park mosque in north London, where radical cleric Abu Hamza was once imam, is among those taking part.

Hamza was jailed in New York for terrorism offences last month, and in recent years, the place of worship has undergone a change of leadership, with a renewed emphasis on inter-faith dialogue.

But after the attacks on the offices of the satirical magazine and a kosher supermarket in Paris by gunmen who claimed they were acting to revenge insults against the Prophet Mohammed, the mosque said it had received threats.

General Secretary Mohammed Kozar told Sky News: "Most of them are nasty drawings about our prophet and our books.

"Some of them make death threats against our community, so it's quite frightening for our community and our mosque."

The shootings by three gunmen, who claimed they were operating on behalf of Islamic State and Al Qaeda in Yemen, prompted Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to write to the Britain's mosques urging them to do more to root out extremists and prevent young people being radicalised.

Sunday's outreach programme at the mosques followed the killing of Japanese hostage Kenji Goto by Islamic State jihadists.

Former army chief Lord Dannatt told Sky News' Dermot Murnaghan that the best way to combat extremist ideology was for communities to work together.

"It's really important that our communities - particularly where there are large Muslim populations - organise themselves and conduct matters in such a way that particularly young Muslims have a stake in the future of this country, and this country has a future in them," he said.

Old Firm, Old Foes: Glasgow Derby Returns

By James Matthews, Scotland Correspondent

One of football's oldest rivalries resumed today when Celtic played Rangers for the first time in three years.

Glasgow's "Old Firm" faced each other in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at the city's Hampden Park stadium.

It was the first Old Firm derby since Rangers were liquidated in 2012 and re-admitted to Scotland's league set-up in the bottom tier.

The story of the Ibrox club has been one of a football giant's demise, brought on by years of overspending, spiralling debts, tax battles and a series of continuing management struggles.

Its financial situation remains precarious and the club is currently being run on loans by the Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley.

He is one of a number of businessman circling Rangers as the fight continues over the future ownership of the club.

It is a far cry from the glory days of nine Scottish league titles in a row, a UEFA Cup final seven years ago, regular Champions League football and a dressing-room that boasted a galaxy of stars such as Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup and Ronald De Boer.

Craig Whyte, the man who bought Rangers in 2011 for £1 from Sir David Murray, is currently facing court charges including the fraudulent takeover of a football club.

Rangers are currently second place in Scotland's Championship, Scottish football's second tier.

Police Scotland have not said they expect trouble to arise around the fixture, but have made it clear they are prepared.

Extra officers have been deployed on the streets of Glasgow.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates, the event commander, said in a statement: "It is our job to ensure that supporters get to and from the game safely and that there is minimum disruption to those who live, work and socialise in the city centre and in and around the stadium.

"This is an intelligence-led operation with officers deployed to identify and engage with potential trouble makers and disrupt their activities.

"There will be a highly visible police presence to ensure the safety of people attending the games and visiting the city and to deal quickly with any disorder."

The occasion enabled rival fans to re-engage in pre-match baiting.

Celtic supporters took out a full-page advert in a Sunday newspaper stating that Rangers are a new club following their liquidation, and that the Old Firm derby is dead.

The advert was criticised by Rangers supporters as being liable to increase tensions in Glasgow ahead of the fixture.

Appeal To Find Doctor Who Helped Ted Robbins

The wife of comic actor Ted Robbins has appealed for help in tracing a doctor who helped her husband after he collapsed on stage.

Robbins fell ill during the opening night of a revival of Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights live show.

The medic, who was in the audience, then came to his aid.

The 59-year-old star, who plays Den Perry in the show, reportedly clutched his chest, stumbled and fell to the ground whilst performing a solo section.

The curtain was closed immediately as staff rushed to the stage with medical equipment before the show was cancelled.

In a message to fans on his Facebook page, his wife Judy praised the treatment of the NHS and appealed for help in tracing the doctor.

She said: "We are so incredibly grateful for everyone's support and we would love more than anything to find out who the doctor was out of the audience who (gave) such fantastic treatment."

She added the actor was "doing well" and will be "fit and healthy soon".

Judy Robbins said: "He is in some pain due to bruising on his ribs from chest compressions but other than that he is doing well.

"Ted had rheumatic fever when he was a child which left him with some heart damage so we have always been aware that he would need a routine procedure to correct."

She also thanked fans for their messages of support, adding: "He will be fit and healthy again soon. God bless all the NHS staff that are doing such a fantastic job."

His sister Kate Robbins wrote on Twitter: "My brother Ted was taken ill on stage. He's been taken to a local hospital. Thank you for all your good wishes and concern. He's a fighter".

Members of the audience used the site to express their shock.

Tom Peck, a sports writer for The Independent newspaper, tweeted: "Horrible atmosphere at phones4u arena. Sold out for Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights. Show cancelled as actor Ted Robbins collapses on stage."

Dave Swanton wrote: "Thoughts are with my mate Ted Robbins taken ill during the opening night of Phoenix Nights. Get well soon pal".

Steve Ens said: "Truly hope Ted Robbins is ok ... Just watched him collapse on stage at the Phoenix Nights show. Best wishes to him & fellow cast members."

The Channel 4 series has been brought back for a live show to raise money for Comic Relief.

Robbins was reprising his role as the main "villain" from the show, in which he burned down the Phoenix club.

The actor, who lives in Lancashire with his two children, has appeared in Brookside, Doctors, Holby City, Little Britain and Coronation Street.

He is currently playing Barry Quid in the revival of Birds Of A Feather and plays the governor of a fictitious prison in the CBBC programme The Slammer.

Missing Mum: Body Suffered 'Violent Assault'

The body of a woman believed to be missing mother-of-four Samantha Henderson was violently attacked around the head and neck, a post-mortem examination has shown.

Detectives say they are "confident" the body, which was found in a lake at Ham Common in Poole, Dorset, on Friday, is that of Ms Henderson.

The 25-year-old, who has children aged six, four, two and one, was last seen leaving Corfe Castle Primary School on 21 January at 3pm.

She was reported missing the next morning.

Ms Henderson's boyfriend Dominic Isom, 27, of Corfe Castle, has pleaded not guilty to her murder.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to stand trial in July.

Detective Inspector Neil Devoto, of Dorset Police's major crime investigation team, said: "This afternoon a post mortem was carried out on the body recovered in Hamworthy.

"It confirmed that the victim had suffered a violent assault that appears to have been focused on her head and neck.

"Detectives are confident the body is that of Samantha Henderson, the 25-year-old mother-of-four from Corfe Castle missing since last week.

"The coroner is aware of the death and formal identification by her next of kin is expected to take place this weekend.

"Although we have recovered a body and a man is charged with murder, it is still vital that people come forward with any information that could help us build a picture of exactly what happened."

Police still want to hear from anyone who saw Ms Henderson's blue Peugeot 307 estate car with the registration HV04 ZFM in the Corfe Castle or Ham Common areas from 3pm on the day she was last seen.

Mr Devoto, who is leading the inquiry, said: "Samantha's death has understandably shocked local people, who have rallied around her family, friends and neighbours in both Corfe Castle and her original home town of Poole.

"Her close family are being supported and regularly updated by specially trained family liaison officers.

"They have asked for privacy at this sad time.

"I would like to thank the public for their ongoing support to officers carrying out this investigation and their patience while we conduct searches.

"Their continued caution on social media is also appreciated and important, as inappropriate comments could cause further hurt to her family or potentially prejudice future criminal proceedings."

Troops May Be 'Least Worst Option' In IS Fight

A former head of the army has told Sky News he believes there will need to be a debate on sending British troops to fight Islamic State if other options are unsuccessful.

The UK has carried out airstrikes against IS in Iraq, but not Syria, and has also provided equipment and training to local forces.

But there is a deep reluctance to commit boots on the ground to the fight, with Prime Minister David Cameron saying when the Commons approved airstrikes that sending combat troops would be "wrong".

Lord Dannatt told Sky's Dermot Murnaghan that the limited steps taken were not likely to be enough to defeat the jihadists who have seized control of large areas of northern Iraq and Syria.

"If this mission is right, and task is right and everything else has failed, there has got to be a debate about whether a least worst option is to provide boots on the ground," he said.

"I'm not calling for it now but I think we need to watch this very carefully."

His comments came after a video was released showing the beheading of Japanese hostage of Kenji Goto by IS.

Professor Peter Neumann, a terrorism expert at King's College London, said the airstrikes had slowed Islamic State's momentum, as seen in the success of Kurdish forces in driving the jihadists out of the Syrian town of Kobani.

"They cannot be defeated militarily but that does not mean military means are completely useless," he told Murnaghan.

He added that the militants could only be ultimately defeated once people within Iraq and Syria rose up and forced them out.

Lord Dannatt admitted there had be a reluctance to see soldiers engage in combat against IS following the experiences in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Boots Boss: Miliband Would Be A 'Catastrophe'

The boss of Boots has said Labour leader Ed Miliband would be a "catastrophe" for Britain if he became prime minister.

Stefano Pessina said Mr Miliband's plans were "not helpful for business, not helpful for the country and in the end it probably won't be helpful for them".

Mr Miliband has also come in for criticism from within the Labour fold, with donor John Mills launching a fresh attack on the party's direction.

Mr Pessina, who is acting chief executive of Boots, told The Sunday Telegraph: "If they acted as they speak, it would be a catastrophe.

"The problem is would they act that way or not?

"One thing is to threaten and to shout but it is completely different to be in charge and to manage the country day to day."

But Labour peer and former Middle East envoy Lord Levy said the comments were "ill-advised" and "inappropriate", adding many Boots customers were Labour supporters.

Lord Levy, the party's former chief fundraiser, also told Sky's Dermot Murnaghan that he would not rule out raising money for Mr Miliband.

Mr Pessina also warned Britain leaving the European Union would be a "big mistake".

David Cameron has promised an in/out referendum by the end of 2017 if he is returned to power after polling day on 7 May.

Former health secretary Alan Milburn said earlier this week that the party's focus on extra funding for the NHS without plans for reforms could prove to be a "fatal mistake".

Mr Miliband's election chief Lucy Powell said attacks on Labour from its own side were "not helpful" and she said she disagreed with Mr Milburn.

She told Sky's Dermot Murnaghan: "We've got a strong agenda about reforming the NHS to ensure people are looked after at home rather than turn up at hospital unnecessarily.

"When I read some of the newspapers today, I think it says more about the agendas of some of those newspapers than it does about how colleagues and how Labour activists are really feeling."

She said they were feeling "pretty confident because here we are with three months to go until the election. This is our election to win and we are ahead in the polls".

And Labour's election strategist and shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander dismissed Mr Pessina's claims, calling them "rubbish".

He told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show: "We are going on to victory."

Mr Mills, the founder of JML and Labour's biggest individual donor, endorsed Mr Milburn's warning and underlined his criticism of Labour's mansion tax plan.

Mr Mills told the Mail on Sunday: "I agree with Milburn - if you look at the Continental model, they have a much greater mix of public and private provision."

He added: "I am not convinced of the case for a tax on expensive properties. And it certainly should not be hypothecated for the NHS.

"It would be much better to introduce extra council tax bands and spend the money on local needs, such as affordable housing."

The editor of the New Statesman, Jason Cowley, also renewed his criticism of Mr Miliband.

He told the Mail that the mood of Labour MPs is "not so much one of despair, it's worse than that resignation".

The party appeared to be "willing itself to defeat", Mr Cowley added.

Chancellor George Osborne seized on Mr Pessina's remarks.

He said: "This is a clear warning from the head of one of Britain's biggest employers about the economic catastrophe the UK would suffer if Ed Miliband's policies were put into effect.

"The price of this catastrophe would be paid by families across the country who would see their jobs and incomes put at risk."

Tories Count On Times Tables Learning Plan

All schoolchildren in England will be expected to pass tough tests before leaving primary school as part of a "war on illiteracy and innumeracy," the education secretary has said.

Nicky Morgan is planning for pupils to be forced to learn their 12 times tables off by heart and write a coherent short story by 11.

They would also be expected to know long division and show they can use "accurate punctuation, spelling and grammar".

Headteachers who fail to ensure enough pupils meet the standards face being sacked if the Conservatives win the General Election, she indicated.

In an article for The Sunday Times, Ms Morgan said she expected England to reach the top of European league tables for English and maths by 2020, and be in the top five internationally - a significant leap from the current ranking of 23rd.

She said: "We will expect every pupil by the age of 11 to know their times tables off by heart, to perform long division and complex multiplication and to be able to read a novel.

"They should be able to write a short story with accurate punctuation, spelling and grammar. The new tests for 11 year olds we are introducing next year will be strengthened to ensure that every young person is meeting the mark."

She laid out her plans as David Cameron prepared for a speech on Monday in which he is expected to further outline Tory education policies.

Ms Morgan said she is "absolutely fighting" for the schools budget to be protected for five to 16-year-olds if the Conservatives remain in power after May's vote.

Speaking on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, she also dismissed reports that Chief Whip Michael Gove is receiving her ministerial papers through back channels in the Department for Education as "complete nonsense".

Shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt, meanwhile, claimed the Government's schools policy was allowing more unqualified teachers into classrooms which was damaging England's international position in education.

The Labour frontbencher said: "David Cameron's flawed schools policy is damaging our education system and failing to close the learning gap between disadvantaged children and the rest.

"Many parents will be shocked to learn that David Cameron's government has changed the rules to allow unqualified teachers into the classroom on a permanent basis, leading to a 16% rise in the last year alone.

"Labour will ensure that all teachers are qualified and continue to train to improve their teaching as a condition to remaining in the classroom.

"This is how we improve the learning and life chances for all children and raise our international position in reading, writing and maths."

Man Spreading Ashes Washed Out To Sea

The search for a man who was washed out to sea off north Cornwall as he spread ashes has ended.

Coastguard teams have been looking for the 51-year-old victim along the shoreline.

He was last seen at Port William, near Tintagel, where he was caught by a large wave.

Two others, who were with him at the time, went into the sea in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue him.

A search and rescue helicopter was scrambled by Falmouth Coastguard from RAF Chievenor.

Rescue teams from Boscastle and Port Isaac and lifeboats began a shoreline search on Saturday.

It lasted for four hours before it was called off for the night amid gale force winds and rough seas.

The search resumed on Sunday morning has now ended after they found no sign of the victim.

Alan Barnes Meets Woman Behind £200K Campaign

A disabled pensioner who was mugged outside his home has met the woman behind a campaign that has raised £220,000 to support him.

Alan Barnes said it felt "magic" to meet beautician Katie Cutler, who set up an online fundraising page after reading about the attack.

The 21-year-old's campaign went viral and has raised more than 400 times its original £500 target in three days.

Mr Barnes said: "I didn't expect anything - it's hard to figure out what to think really."

Ms Cutler said: "It's like a dream."

Mr Barnes, 67, who has disabilities from birth after his mother contracted German measles when she was pregnant, broke his collarbone when he was pushed over by his attacker.

People were moved to help after hearing that Mr Barnes - who is 4ft 6ins tall and weighs less than six stone - was too afraid to return to his home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Following reports of the attack, which police described as "disgraceful", Ms Cutler set up the Help Alan Barnes online donation page on the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

She wrote: "I was so upset that anyone could target a disabled pensioner and be so cruel.

"We can't take away what has happened but with a little donation we can make the future a prettier one and help towards the cost of his new home. Thank you all."
